Tanzania Visa Requirements
What you need to enter Tanzania, how to apply for an e-visa, and what to prepare before you fly.
Do you need a visa?
Most nationalities need a visa to enter Tanzania, including for visits to Zanzibar, which is covered by the same national visa. A small number of countries have visa-exempt or visa-on-arrival-only arrangements, so it is worth checking your specific nationality before you travel.
Applying for an e-visa
The simplest route for most travellers is the official Tanzania e-visa, applied for online before departure. Approval typically takes a few business days, so we recommend applying at least two to three weeks before your trip.
Visas on arrival are available at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Julius Nyerere International Airport and several land borders, but queues can be long during peak season — an e-visa avoids that entirely.
What you will need
- A passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, with at least one blank page
- A passport-style photo for the application
- Proof of onward or return travel
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from, or have transited through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission
Costs and current requirements
Visa fees vary by nationality and are updated periodically by Tanzanian immigration authorities, so we do not quote a fixed figure here. We share the current official guidance with you once your travel dates are confirmed, and are happy to answer questions specific to your passport.
